The Edinburgh to North Berwick race

The race began in 1958, and was held almost every year until 2017. It was revived in 2022.

This race offers an excellent chance of a good time, being a mostly flat course on hard surface,,, a good trial for any upcoming marathon.

The distance has been professionally measured in recent years as being exactly 20 miles.

Plenty drinks and good food at the finish.

Lots of prizes and spot-prizes.

2024 : The 57th staging of the race will take place on Saturday 4th May 2024, starting on Portobello prom at 9:45am.

The Treble : Since 2007, runners who completed the Edinburgh Marathon AND the Seven Hills of Edinburgh won a whisky double. Starting in 2024 super-stars will have to complete the Treble in order to get their whisky... by completing the Edinburgh to N. Berwick AND the (full) Edinburgh Marathon [26th May] AND the Seven Hills of Edinburgh (Race or Challenge) [16th June]. The awards will be handed out at the end of the Seven Hills prize-giving.

TRAIN : Station is 600yds from Finish area: trains to Edinburgh at
12.20 13.21 14.25 15.28 16.24

BUS (no.124) : Half-hourly from nearby Church Rd; takes 70 minutes to reach Portobello (Kings Rd)

EVENT COACH BACK TO PORTOBELLO: Only for those who have pre-booked a place on it. It will depart from near the Finish area shortly after the end of the prize-giving (which starts at 1pm).

REGISTRATION : At Power League football, 10 Westbank Street, Portobello, Edinburgh, EH15 1DR. Plenty parking adjacent. Doors open 8.30am. Discover your allocated race-number from the pinned-up list at the entrance, and then collect your number-package in the changing-rooms (M/F): it will contain (a) your race-number; (b) your numbered kit-bag; and (c) 4 safety-pins.

TEAM EVENT : Teams of 3 or 4 runners can be entered, best 3 places to count. Captains fill in a form (at the gazebo at the building's entrance) with the names and numbers. Modest prizes for first two teams and for best all-female team.

KIT-BAGS : These should be placed beside the large white van outside the registration building.

The START : At 9:45:00 precisely. On the Portobello promenade, approx 700 yds west of the registration building.

HEAD-PHONES : Bone-conduction type ok; ear-plug type definitely not.

PACE : Runners are expected to be able to finish in no more than 3hrs 20... 10 mins per mile pace. (Nobody will be pulled off the course, but slower runners should be aware that on-course staff won't remain in position indefinitely.)

EVENT CYCLISTS : There will be lead-cyclists to show the way, and tail-cyclists to assist back-markers if required.

The FINISH : On the grassy area beside NB putting-green. Runners' kit-bags will be laid out in blocks for collection. Free food and drink for all competitors. First Aid available. No showers, but the North Sea is only 50 yards away. Public toilets are 400 yards eastwards.

RECYCLING : After finishing, runners are asked to detach their race-number and put it (and pins) in the containers provided, to be used again next year (save the planet).

RESULTS : Results will be pinned up on a board near the finish as runners complete the course. (Full results should be on this website by evening.)

PRIZE-GIVING : At 1pm.

DROPPING OUT : If you have to drop out, then try to thumb a lift eastwards... to NB, or at least to the next water-station. Failing this, try to contact the nearest water-station (phone-numbers will be on the back of your race-number), and they will send a car to uplift you. Whatever, do try to inform an event official (marshall / cyclist / w-station).

CHARITY : Any surplus funds will go to SportsAid Scotland, which helps our young running stars with their travel and equipment expenses.

WITHDRAWAL OF ENTRY : Entrants who subsequently need to withdraw may email the organiser to request a deferral to the following year. (Transfers of entries not allowed.)

CANCELLATION : In the extremely unlikely event of the race being cancelled or postponed, all entrants will be offered a full refund.
